Driftword

Typing and speech, hands-free

Driftword lets a person who can't use a keyboard type and speak. Words and letters drift down the screen, and you steer a paddle under the one you want with a finger, a trackpad, a pointer, or head and eye movement seen by the phone's front camera. It suggests the next words as you go and reads your message aloud with the phone's own voice.

DNASkittle showing the human Y chromosome as columns of colored sequence bars and a red similarity map

2012–13, 2016–17Genome browser

DNASkittle

DNASkittle turns raw DNA sequence into pictures, so people can see patterns that are hard to spot in letters. Each view is a Python transform drawn with HTML5 Canvas that shows the data without assumptions about what it contains, and users can upload their own sequences for our servers to process.

For the Feed My Sheep Foundation we later moved its DNA Data Visualization tool from C# to Python, so it now draws the whole human genome as zoomable images of 1.2 GB and more.

Support

Email support@newline.us with your device model, its Android or iOS version, and what happened. Support is by email only.

We read every report as time allows, but we can't promise a reply, a fix or a response time. Please don't send health information about yourself or anyone else.

In an emergency, call 911 or use the facility's emergency system. Driftword's Help button only shows and speaks a message on the device. It doesn't call, text or alert anyone.

Common questions

Does Driftword need the internet?
No. Everything it needs is built in, so it works without a connection. Updates come through the app store.
What happens to the camera pictures?
Head and eye control use the front camera. Each picture is processed on the device as it's taken and is never saved or sent anywhere.
How do I move my words and settings to a new device?
Everything is stored only on the device. In the app, under Backup, choose "Save a backup file", then choose "Load a backup file" on the new device.
Is Driftword a medical device?
No. It's a general typing and speech tool. Confirm important messages another way, such as a yes or no question, before acting on them.

Privacy Policy

Effective November 1, 2026

We do not collect, sell or share your personal information. The App has no accounts, no ads, no analytics and no tracking. Newline Technical Innovations LLC cannot see what you type or say.

What stays on your device

Your messages, favorites, personal words, recent phrases, the word patterns the App learns from your messages, your settings and camera calibration are stored only on your device. They are deleted when you clear the App's data or remove the App. A backup file you export is yours, stored wherever you choose to put it.

The camera

When you choose head or eye control, the App uses the front camera. Each picture is processed on the device, in real time, to estimate where the head or eyes point. Pictures are never recorded, saved or sent anywhere. Only a few calibration numbers, not images, are saved on the device.

The voice

The App speaks with your device's built-in text-to-speech voice. That voice is provided by your device or browser maker, such as Google or Apple, under their own privacy policies. Most voices work on the device, but some may use the maker's online service, depending on your device's settings.

Internet connections

The App does not connect to the internet. Everything it needs, including its typeface and the face-tracking component, is built in, and it works without a connection. Updates come through the app store you got it from.

Information from the app stores

Apple and Google may share anonymous statistics with us, such as how many people installed the App, and crash reports from people who chose to share diagnostics with app developers in their device settings. These do not identify you to us. Apple's and Google's own privacy policies cover what they collect.

Email

If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you write. We use it only to reply and fix bugs, and we delete it when it is no longer needed. Please do not send health information.

Children

The App is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone, including children.

Health information

We are not a health care provider, a HIPAA covered entity or a business associate, and the App does not send health information to us.

Changes and contact

If we change this policy, we will update the date above and show a notice in the App for important changes. Questions: support@newline.us.

Terms of Service

Effective November 1, 2026

1. Agreeing to these terms

Driftword (the "App") is provided by Newline Technical Innovations LLC, a Colorado limited liability company ("we", "us", "our"). By downloading, installing, opening or using the App, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the App.

You must be at least 18 to accept these Terms. If you set up the App for another person, such as a patient, family member or client (the "User"), you accept these Terms for yourself and on that person's behalf, and you are responsible for how the App is set up and used for them.

2. What the App is, and what it is not

The App is a general-purpose typing and speech tool for phones and tablets, offered only through the Apple App Store and Google Play. It lets a person pick letters, words and phrases with a finger, a pointer, or head or eye movement seen by the device's camera, and reads the result aloud with the device's own voice.

The App is not a medical device. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, mitigate, monitor or prevent any disease or condition. It has not been reviewed, cleared or approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration or any other regulator.

We do not provide medical, nursing, therapy, speech-language, caregiving or emergency services, and nothing in the App is medical advice. The App is not a substitute for a communication device or plan recommended by a speech-language pathologist, doctor or other clinician. Decisions about care belong to the User, their caregivers and their health care providers.

3. Safety

Mounts, stands and placement are your responsibility. You alone choose, install, adjust and check any mount, stand, clamp, holder, pillow or other support used with the device. Phones, tablets and mounts can slip, tip, fall or come loose, and can injure someone, including a person who cannot move out of the way.

Any drawings, examples or suggestions in the App about mounting or placing a device are general illustrations only. They are not instructions, safety assessments or endorsements of any product.

The App does not contact anyone. The Help button only shows and speaks a message on the device. It does not call, text or alert anyone, and it is not connected to a nurse call system or to emergency services. Do not rely on the App to get help in an emergency. In an emergency, call 911 or use the facility's emergency system.

Supervision. A person who depends on the App should always have another way to get help, and a caregiver should be present or within reach.

Comfort. Using the App can be tiring, especially with head or eye movement. Stop and rest if it causes discomfort, strain or fatigue.

4. Messages can be wrong or misunderstood

The App guesses and suggests words, and it picks whatever the paddle or pointer rests on. A message can therefore be wrong, incomplete or unintended, for example because of a wrong prediction, an accidental tap, a tremor, a camera tracking error, a misheard or mispronounced voice, a quiet speaker or a device that stopped working.

Always confirm important messages another way, such as a yes or no question, before acting on them. This matters most for anything about pain, symptoms, medication, treatment, consent, end-of-life wishes, money or legal matters. The App is not intended for giving legal consent or signing documents.

We are not responsible for any decision, action, delay or harm that results from a message that was created, spoken, shown, misunderstood or not delivered by the App.

Saved information can be lost. Favorites, personal words, recent phrases, learned words and settings are stored only on the device. They are lost if the App's data is cleared, the App is removed or the device fails. Use the App's backup feature to keep a copy.

5. Support

The App comes with very limited technical support, or none. You can report bugs to support@newline.us. We read reports as time allows, but we do not promise a reply, a fix, an update or any response time.

We do not offer phone or live support, and we cannot help with setting up devices or mounts, with a person's care, or with medical questions. Please do not send health information about yourself or anyone else in a bug report.

We may change, suspend or stop offering the App, or any feature of it, at any time and without notice.

6. No warranty, and limits on our liability

THE APP IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE", WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING ANY WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, ACCURACY, RELIABILITY OR NON-INFRINGEMENT. We do not promise that the App will work without errors or interruption, on every device, or with every camera, voice or mount.

Your risks. You understand that using the App involves risks, including a device or mount falling, messages being wrong or misunderstood, camera tracking failing, the device's battery or voice failing, and saved information being lost. You accept those risks.

LIMITATION OF LIABILITY. TO THE FULLEST EXTENT THE LAW ALLOWS, NEWLINE TECHNICAL INNOVATIONS LLC AND ITS MEMBERS, MANAGERS, EMPLOYEES AND CONTRACTORS ARE NOT LIABLE FOR:

THIS APPLIES WHATEVER THE LEGAL THEORY, INCLUDING CONTRACT, PRODUCT LIABILITY AND NEGLIGENCE, INCLUDING OUR OWN NEGLIGENCE, EVEN IF WE WERE TOLD SUCH DAMAGES WERE POSSIBLE. OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ANY CLAIM CONNECTED WITH THE APP IS LIMITED TO THE GREATER OF THE AMOUNT YOU PAID FOR THE APP, OR US $50.

These limits do not cover liability for our gross negligence, willful misconduct or fraud, or anything else the law does not allow to be limited. Nothing in these Terms takes away a right you have under a consumer protection law that cannot be waived.

Indemnity. You agree to defend, indemnify and hold harmless Newline Technical Innovations LLC and its members, managers, employees and contractors from any claim, loss or expense (including reasonable legal fees) that comes from your use of the App, your setup of the App or of any device or mount for another person, or your breaking these Terms.

7. Your license, and who owns what

License. We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use the App on the devices that the app store you got it from allows, under that store's rules. On the Apple App Store, that means Apple devices you own or control that use your Apple Account, plus family members where Family Sharing applies. On Google Play, it means Android devices signed in to your Google account, plus family members where the store allows sharing. A purchase stays in the store it was made in: buying the App on the Apple App Store does not include the Google Play version, and the other way around.

You may not copy, sell, rent or redistribute the App; reverse engineer it except where the law allows; remove its notices; or use it for anything unlawful.

Ownership. The App, including its code, design and drawings, belongs to Newline Technical Innovations LLC and is protected by copyright and other laws. The App's name and logo are our trademarks.

Third-party parts. The App includes open-source software, fonts and data from others. Each is licensed under its own terms, listed on the App's About page, and those terms govern that part.

Feedback. If you send us ideas or suggestions, we may use them freely and without owing you anything.

Apple App Store. If you got the App from Apple's App Store:

Google Play. If you got the App from Google Play, Google Play's Terms of Service also apply. These Terms are between you and us, and Google is not responsible for the App.

8. Changes, disputes and the rest

Changes. We may update these Terms. We will change the date at the top and show a notice in the App for important changes. Using the App after a change means you accept the new Terms.

Governing law. These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Colorado, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute will be brought only in the state courts in El Paso County, Colorado, or the federal court for the District of Colorado, and you agree to those courts' jurisdiction. Either of us may instead bring a claim in small claims court if it qualifies.

General. If any part of these Terms cannot be enforced, the rest still applies. Not enforcing a right is not a waiver of it. These Terms are the whole agreement between you and us about the App. You may not transfer them; we may transfer them to a successor.
